Treadmills are important sporting equipments
that help one to reduce weight and keep fit. A treadmill
enables a person to run or walk on it while it is in motion.
It is an indoor instrument and provides the benefits of
walking to the person who is using it. The term treadmill is
derived from a mill that was used by a human being or an
animal to tread over and grind grains. In the present times it
is used by people to derive the benefits of walking by staying
at one place.
The machine works on the basis of a belt
system. The top portion of the belt creates a movement that
allows the runner to run or walk at a speed that is
appropriate for him. The speed is necessarily the opposite
one. However, the walker or runner using it can adjust the
speed of the treadmill. The speed of the mill is the rate at
which the belt moves and also the rate at which the runner
runs. The expensive and high tech treadmills are driven by
motors. The simple and cheap ones are passive and they do not
have motors attached to them. The person using it manually
handles the machine. These treadmills move only when the
runner running on it pushes the belt with the feet. The runner
actually operates it to resist the motion of the treadmill and
the mill moves aiding the runner to go through a full body
exercise regimen. This helps you to lose weight.
There are several advantages of using
treadmills.
˘ Running or walking on treadmill is easy
and non-complicated. In fact, walking like regular free hand
exercises enhances the endurance of the users. ˘ It
is advantageous to walk on a treadmill since it has a shock
absorber. This causes fewer sprains of ankles, lower backs and
knees. ˘ Treadmills are good option for people who do
not wish to go out for walking outside. They can derive the
benefits of walking by using a treadmill indoors.
˘ Another advantage of using a treadmill is that
while you are walking on it you can read a book, watch a
television and do other things to distract the mind from the
rigorous exercise regimen. ˘ Treadmills as an
instrument can adjust slopes according to the exact
calculation and speed. ˘ Some of the more advanced
treadmills have features such as heart rate monitors, calorie
monitors and step counters. ˘ A treadmill enhances
the VO2.
Treadmill is a conveyor belt and hence can be
used for other activities apart from running. Horses are
tested before racing on a treadmill. These treadmills are
specially constructed and are large in shape and size. Certain
large treadmills can also accommodate cars. Some more advanced
treadmills are known as omnidirectional treadmills. These
treadmills can move in two directions from the base and are
known as 'holodeck'. These are much more flexible than the
normal treadmills and provide several advantages to the users
who use it to keep fit.
